This might seem like a pretty mediocre meal, but this meal was a year in the making. Acorns will keep for years, if dried and stored properly but many people disregard the idea of using this native food because it takes much more time to process acorns for cooking than it would to go to the grocery store and buy a bag of wheat flour. But they're missing out on being under the canopy of mighty oak trees with the sun shining down on them, the sound of birds singing and the smell of grass in the air. Plus, acorns are nutrient dense, a complete protein with carbohydrates and fats as well as vitamins and minerals. We process a batch a few times a year and really savor the connection we've made with the world around us. . . . #quercusrubra #redoak #acorns #maplesyrup #acersaccharum #natureconnection #wildfood #forage #ratherhuntgather #ancestralplants #wildfoodlove #the100dayproject 7/100
Red squirrels sit on a branch or stump and pull the seeds from spruce cones, dropping the leftover bits to the ground, creating massive midden piles.
